Flagrant foul
A flagrant foul is a player’s illegal contact with an opponent, which violates the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play, and by its nature and/or the severity level exceeds the limits of a personal or disruptive foul. The criteria for flagrant fouls are the following:
- Not a legitimate basketball play against an opponent, with or without a ball.
- Reckless, violent or dangerous act, which causes or may cause injury to an opponent.
- Excessive, hard contact in an effort to play the ball or an opponent. A flagrant foul shall count towards the game disqualification.
A1 is dribbling near the sideline. B1 makes no legitimate basketball play and strikes A1 with excessive hard contact.
B1 shall be charged with a flagrant foul. The contact is not a legitimate basketball play and exceeds the limits of a personal foul.
A1 is airborne on a 3-point shot attempt. B1 makes a reckless close-out and steps inside A1’s cylinder. After the release of the ball, A1 lands on B1’s foot and twists the ankle or otherwise becomes injured because of B1’s contact.
B1 shall be charged with a flagrant foul for reckless and dangerous play.
A1 is airborne on a dunk attempt. B1 moves under A1, causing A1 to lose balance and land heavily on the floor.
B1 shall be charged with a flagrant foul for reckless and dangerous play.
After A1’s unsuccessful shot for goal, B1 rebounds the ball and is immediately fouled by A2, who pulls B1’s arm. B1 reacts by swinging the elbows and making hard contact with A2’s chest.
A2 shall be charged with a personal foul, and B1 shall be charged with a flagrant foul for violent and dangerous play.
A1 is airborne on a lay-up. B1 makes excessive, hard contact on A1 by pulling A1’s shoulders while attempting to stop the play.
B1 shall be charged with a flagrant foul, as the contact is excessive and exceeds the limits of a personal foul.
A1 is driving into the restricted area. After A1 has gathered the ball and started the shooting motion towards the basket, B1 swings the arm while trying to deflect the ball and makes hard contact on A1’s arm, either by pulling down or by following through.
B1 shall be charged with a flagrant foul, as the contact is excessive and exceeds the limits of a personal foul.
